Inaugural Meeting (April 18th - 19th, 2012)

The Inaugural Meeting of the Health Finance and Investment Forum (HFIF) was held on the 18th and 19th of April at the International Convention Center in Cairo, Egypt. The conference took place during the Mediconex Cairo Health Exhibition, the biggest medical exhibition in Egypt and North Africa.

The conference brought together around 100 distinguished leaders and experts from the healthcare and financial sectors including chairmen, CEOs and top managers to share their experiences and ideas, to learn about new trends, to discuss the future development of the intersection between finance and healthcare and to share potential business opportunities.

The feedback of the conference was very positive. The next conference, to be held in spring of next year, is now eagerly awaited. In the meantime, the HFIF will initiate further events for realizing its vision of empowering socially responsible finance and investment in the healthcare sector. The dialogue has begun – what now counts is to not let it fall silent again.

KICK-OFF DEBATE: WHAT IS HAMPERING FINANCE AND INVESTMENT IN HEALTHCARE?

This session represented an interactive debate with the participants. Through professional moderation, the session highlighted key challenges facing finance and investment in Egypt. The results of the key studies conducted by the forum up to now were presented. Experiences and inputs of the participants were shared. The outcome of this session defined the key discussions for the panels over the two days.

SESSION 1: ACCESS TO FINANCE. HOW CAN THE HEALTHCARE INDUSTRY BENEFIT?

This session highlighted the different tools for financing. The key persons from the industry made a brief description of each tool. This was followed by discussions on the advantages of each of them. Finally, the outcome of this session defined how the healthcare industry could benefit from these various tools. The appetite for investment in healthcare in Egypt was explored. As health is a human service, the perspectives of social responsibility gave an overview of the social and developmental impacts of investment.

SESSION 2: INVESTMENT IN HEALTHCARE. THE TIME IS NOW

This session included representatives from different companies investing in the healthcare sector. The session covered real cases of investment in Egypt like the deal between the EuroMena Funds and Al Oyoun Al Dawli hospital that was announced during the forum and the healthcare city project in New Cairo. Also experience of investment in medical education from the MENA region were shared.  The opportunity for investment in the sector was highlighted. Finally, this was interrelated to the newly planned social health insurance law and its impact on finance and investment in healthcare.

SESSION 3: UNLEASHING THE POTENTIALS FOR INVESTMENT IN THE EGYPTIAN HEALTHCARE INDUSTRY

This session focused on putting Egypt on the right track for investment in healthcare. Through an optimistic positive outlook, a multi-stakeholder approach to enabling the industry was discussed. Moderated by the founding partner of the only equity fund in the MENA region focusing on healthcare, the different factors that would empower investment in the healthcare industry were addressed. The outcome of the session was interlinked with the challenges defined during the first day.

This session focused on the factors driving the growth of the healthcare industry in general. This was linked to the Egyptian healthcare market. The outcome of this session spotted the opportunities for Egypt to make benefits from the evolving healthcare industry.
